4. The Evil Dead
No list of terrifying horror films would be complete without a nod to Sam Raimi’s low-budget classic. Alright, so leading man Bruce Campbell can’t really act (and nor can anyone else for that matter), but the characters are second to the absolute bloody mayhem of the plot and the sheer amount of fun everyone seems to be having battling the undead in a cabin in the woods. Setting up the world for decades of copycats, this, one of the original slasher movies, threw itself into the world with gusto and some really impressive special effects into the bargain.
