4. The Shining

It’s hard to believe that when The Shining was first released it was seen as a complete misfire. Cut to 34 years later and Kubrick’s take on Stephen King’s most famous novel is hailed as a classic of the genre. It’s not hard to see why, with many great scenes that have become imbedded in popular culture: the creepy twins (who set the cause of twins back a hundred years, but it’s still a cool arty trick), the elevator full of blood, and “Here’s Johnny”, to name a few. Kubrick’s masterpiece is still as horrifying today as it was when it was released.
