10 Crazy Films That Never Got Made
6. The Lord of the Rings
Continuing the musical WTF theme: The Beatles originally wanted to star in The Lord of the Rings. Who would they get to make this movie I hear you ask: Stanley Kubrick, obviously. Thanks to the success of Beatles films A Hard Day’s Night, and Yellow Submarine, Apple films seen the potential for and adaptation of the JRR Tolkien series. Apparently the, unintentionally hilarious, roles were already cast. John Lennon would play Gollum, Paul McCartney would play Frodo, Ringo Starr would take on Sam, and George Harrison would be Gandalf. Just let that sink in for a minute. The project fell apart because Apple didn’t own the rights to the books and Kubrick passed because he thought it would be too difficult.
