8. Slacker

Slacker is a nineties classic for many reasons: it’s the debut film from indie darling Richard Linkletter, it inspired indie filmmakers like Kevin Smith to pick up a camera, and it popularized the term “slacker.” Shot for just $23,000, Linkletter saved money by using a handheld camera for most of the shoot: giving the film a documentary type feel. Though he has gone on to make bigger, more expensive films, the spirit and skill of Slacker can still be felt in Linkletter’s work.
