4. The Cast, Cloud Atlas
There is something unnerving about the cast of Cloud Atlas portraying characters of other racial groups. Examples include Halle Berry playing a white woman, and Jim Sturgess and Hugo Weaving playing Asian characters. The Wachowski’s had to defend this decision soon after the film was released due to criticism from the Media Action Network for Asian Americans. Their response to these criticisms that the same multi-racial actors portrayed multiple roles of various nationalities and races (not just Asian), across a 500-year story arc, showing “the continuity of souls” critical to the story, still weird though.
