14. Waking Life
Richard Linklater doesn’t make financially successful films (unless they star Zac Efron or Jack Black), but he does have a creative vision that stands out against most traditional Hollywood cinema. Waking Life is his most ambitious film. Shot in rotoscope animation, Waking Life is about the landscape of dreams and their existential meanings and consequences. While Linklater would use this technique with more success with A Scanner Darkly, Waking Life remains a film that is light years ahead of its time due to its ideas and its execution.
