7. McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Robert Altman’s classic is the anti-western. Starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie, McCabe and Mrs. Miller takes all the conventions of a western and turns them upside down. This is shown with gusto in the films ending. Shot in the middle of winter McCabe tries to outrun three assassins in the middle of the town. Instead of the towns-people hiding from what’s going on (like in High Noon), they are unaware as they are trying to put out a fire. The film, and Altman’s, reputation has grown steadily through the years to make McCabe and Ms Miller into a classic distortion of the western genre.
