A common trait of actors of this period is find your niche and stick with it. As already said: James Stewart stuck with his, Cary Grant stuck with his, but Humphrey Bogart was the real master. Bogey was the trademark for the film noir private eye. He even played the two most famous private eyes in the genre: Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe, and Dashiell Hamnet’s Sam Spade. Even in his most famous role as Rick in Casablanca, the wry one-liners are there, the knowledge that he can handle any situation, Bogart was the Boss.
