This period martial arts movie is based on the life of Bruce Lee’s teacher: the eponymous Ip Man. Not only is Ip Man a great martial arts film, it is an extremely successful period drama. And a fitting biopic of a legendary figure. The film takes place in the 1930s when China was invaded by Japan. Using his formidable talents, the Ip Man defends himself and his family by defeating Japanese soldiers in a martial arts competition. While Ip Man was not the first film to tell this legendary man’s story, it is definitely the most successful.
