5. Musical References

While Tarantino is known for being able to find the weirdest music that somehow works just right in a scene, Flowers on the Wall was a particularly strange choice. Sung by the Statler Brothers, the song plays as Butch is returning to his house to pick up his watch, and contains the lines “smokin’ cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo”. In the movie Die Hard with a Vengeance (in which Willis famously plays the lead, John Maclane), Samuel L. Jackson’s character asks him what he’s been up to, and he replies “smoking cigarettes, watching Captain Kangaroo”. Movie trivia for the ages, that.
