10 Films That Prove Sci Fi Is a Force Again
9. District 9
The debut film from director Neil Blomkamp, is the perfect mix of action, horror, comedy and political allegory, all wrapped up in a shiny science fiction bow. In Johannesburg, in 1982, a spaceship enters the atmosphere above the city. The spaceship is full of sick aliens, called prawns, which are segregated into District 9. Starring Sharlto Copley, as a South African bureaucrat who becomes infected by an alien parasite and has to go on the run from his own government. Based partly on the events in District Six, Cape Town during the apartheid era, Blomkamp uses the trappings of science fiction to tell an important and powerful story of suffering. And there’s lots of action too!
