3. Halo

The main reason Microsoft’s flagship game has not made the move from console to screen is money. A Halo movie was all set to go as early as 2005 with a completed script from author and screenwriter Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later, and Dredd). Post production on the film seemed to be moving along with Peter Jackson in talk to produce and a pre-District 9 Neil Blomkamp set to direct. In the end, Microsoft wanted too much money from the outcome of the project, causing both 20th Century Fox and Universal to pull out of the film. The rights have reverted back to Microsoft, and there is always interest in the project and, if made, could buck the trend of disappointing films based on video games.
