6. Batman vs Superman (Wolfgang Peterson)
After passing on Aronofsky, the studio went for a story more fitting to the characters role in the wider DC universe. Directed by Wolfgang Peterson, with a script from Seven writer Andrew Kevin Walker, Batman vs Superman would have been the first comic book crossover film, beating the Avengers by 9 years. The story followed Bruce Wayne whose behavior as Batman becomes increasingly more violent after the death of his girlfriend at the hands of the Joker. It would have been up to Superman to bring Batman back from the brink to take on both the Joker and Lex Luthor. The role would have gone to Christian Bale, with Josh Hartnett in talks to play Superman. Both Wolfgang Peterson and the studio abandoned the project to focus on Troy and Batman Begins respectively.
