10 Movies Made For $100,000
3. Assault on Precinct 13
The most expensive film on the list is John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13. Made for under $100,000, the film showcases Carpenter at a time when he could do no wrong. Filmed in the fall of 1975, shooting lasted only 20 days. To save costs, Carpenter got creative and watched the footage he’d shot that day–the dailies–projected on to a bed sheet. The resulting film is one of Carpenter’s very best. Lacking a cast of familiar faces, that led the strength of the story to come to the fore. The film was remade in 2005 with a bigger budget and starred Ethan Hawke, Gabriel Byrne, and Lawrence Fishburne. Does it stand up to the original? No chance!
