5. Clerks
One of the most famous cheap films on this list is Kevin Smith’s debut Clerks. Made for $27,575, and shot in black and white (because it was also cheaper), Clerks has become a cult classic and one of the best films of the nineties. All of the things that make a Kevin Smith film are here: the loser protagonist and his sarcastic friend, the first appearance of Jay and Smith’s alter ego Silent Bob, a great soundtrack, and no Ben Affleck in sight. For that reason alone, Clerks is still Smith’s best film.
