10 Performances the Critics Missed
3. Gary Oldman- Sid and Nancy
When you think of Sid Vicious, it has to be said that your mind doesn’t immediately leap to Gary Oldman. He’s too gruff, too old, too used to playing the cartoon bad guy- that is, until you spy him in this interesting biopic of the punk rocker’s life. His other half is played by Chloe Webb, with whom he has sparkling chemistry-but his performance is really brought to life by Oldman’s snarl, his attitude and his anger at “the man”, all underpinned by a sense of insecurity and longing for place that makes the ending, when it comes, all the more inevitable and poignant.
