10 Performances the Critics Missed
5. Emily Watson-Breaking the Waves
Talking about giving your all to a role. Literally. Here, the young Emily Watson (who snaffled the role from under the nose of Helena Bonham Carter) takes on the emotionally taxing challenge of portraying every part of a young woman- her sexuality, her vulnerability, and her emotion. The voyeuristic nature of the camerawork gives the whole film a watching-from-the-bushes effect, while Watson manages to give her character charm and likeability even when we’re seeing her at her very worst. A disgracefully overlooked performance, and one that should have had her showered with awards.
