12. Star Trek Into Darkness
The film that cemented Star Trek’s places as a Paramount franchise made $466 million worldwide. Great numbers for the sequel directed by JJ Abrams, and starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch. You would think that Into Darkness was a solid hit, making more money than the first film. However the bane of tentpole films: advertising costs, stopped the film from becoming a runaway success. Plus the film made less money in the US (the market that counts) than the first one.
