8. The Amityville Horror
Based on a novel published by Jan Anson in 1976, The Amityville Horror is ostensibly based upon real-life events- though that remains up for debate. Whichever way you prefer to look at it, the movie nails the perfect haunted house story in a couple of hours- young family, creepy goings-on, and jump-scares so good that even the most hardened amongst can’t subdue our yelps of terror. A great performance by James Brolin (father of Josh Brolin) as the father in peril seals the deal.
