4. The Road
Cormac McCarthy rarely specialises in merry little tales, so any version of his seminal novel The Road is bound to be a bit of a downer. But who knew it would be such a spectacularly bleak affair-Viggo Mortenson stars as a man trying to keep his son alive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Relentlessly miserable, it does feel a little bit like overkill sometimes-but is worth seeing for the beautiful visuals alone, and doubly so if you’re a fan of the (equally austere) book.
