2. Nil by Mouth

To date, Gary Oldman’s first and only performance behind the camera, Nil by Mouth is a shockingly grim depiction of emotional and physical abuse. Ray Winstone as the abuser is repulsive; a truly vile figure with nothing to recommend to him at all. It’s a harrowing watch, depicting life in the grimmer parts of London bathed in drug addicts and boozehounds, while the violence at the very core of the story throws the hopelessness of the surroundings into sharp relief.
