2014 has been a good year for blockbusters: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is breaking records, Godzilla’s hype and great ad campaign helped make it a success. But what happens when it goes wrong? If a movie doesn’t make a profit, it can damage the viability of a franchise, or be a black mark against the director or star. Let’s take a look at some of the most high profile box office failures.

1. The Lone Ranger

Yes, John Carter did it before it was cool, but The Lone Ranger has become the byword for box office flops. While the film’s box office only just crawled over the finish line to break even, the marketing costs eventually sunk the production. With the film, and adding marketing costs, reaching $350 million for production, the movie would have had to make $650 million to really break even. For the first movie of a fledgling franchise, it was too much to ask.
