13 Box Office Stinkers
12. The Spirit
The Spirit had all the ingredients to become a hit: an all-star cast, great source material, a first time director with a visual flair suited to comic book films, and what did we get? Truly the worst crime against comic book films since Howard the Duck. This was Sin City writer Frank Millers’ first sole directing job, but there’s none of the playfulness of Sin City, only the drab humor and nauseatingly boring action scenes. Finally, making Samuel Jackson say “Toilets are always funny” is only one of the many other reasons the film flopped with a loss of $20 million. Stick to the comics Frank. On second thought, don’t.
