7. U-571
U-571 is, as the director accurately puts it, a work of pure fiction. The tale of an American submarine on a secret mission to win the war is taken from the events of the British submarine U-110. The German enigma, which was the bad submarine in the film (go figure) was, in reality, captured quite easily by the British. It’s not all good news though, shortly after the German submarine’s capture the U-110 sank as well. So the film paints a more positive and entertaining picture.
