Top 12 Movie Franchises Coming to the Big Screen in 2015
5. Independence Day 2
17 years after the release of the 1996 film Independence Day, the sequel is set to hit theaters on, no surprise here, 4th of July weekend 2015.
The movie is going to be set twenty years after the events of the original, and will take place in an alternate present-day reality, in which humans have been developing the alien technology that arrived on the planet as a result of the invasion.
The new film is going to have some recurring characters, and the rest will be brand new. The familiar characters will be the former U.S. president Thomas J. Whitemore, played by Bill Pullman, and MIT educated cable repairman Dave Levison, played by Jeff Goldblum. The notable absence is going to be that of Will Smith, who was previously signed on to Independence Day 2, but was thought to be too expensive for the franchise this time around.
Roland Emmerich, who wrote the first film with Dean Devlin, is returning to direct the sequel, which even has a third installment lined up, assuming the second one is as successful as the first. The films were originally going to be a new part one and part two, but waning box office interest in alien flicks determined they would be released one at a time. We’ll have to see how this one goes, as it isn’t the only space film coming out next year.
