4. Far from the Madding Crowd
And for those who’ve got more of a period drama feel to their top movies list, this adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel should be just up your street. An ambitious take on a difficult book that spans decades, it follows the tale of Bathesba Everdene as she engages in three relationships with extremely different men. David Nicholls, he of Great Expectations fame, wrote the script, and Carey Mulligan (who else?) stars as the enchanting, beguiling your Bathesba. Thomas Vinterberg’s first British feature looks set to premiere at Cannes in May, and the rest of us will just have to hold onto our bustles till it achieves the almost inevitable wide release after that.
