Christian Bale is known to go to extreme lengths to be able to portray the characters he plays-on one end of the scale, there Trevor Reznik in The Machinist, for which he dropped several stone to appear emaciated. After this provoked horrified reactions, he went on to pile on 50lb of muscle to portray Batman-only to have director Nolan describe him as a “bear” and ask him to slim down a little. Probably so he’d fit on the damn screen.
