You wouldn’t necessarily associate Akira Kurisowa-one of Asia’s finest and most internationally recognised directors-with Shakespeare, but his final movie was, in fact, an adaptation of King Lear. An aging King divides his empire between his sons-and in-fighting and chaos threaten to tear the family apart. It’s interwoven with Japanese mythology, but the central plot is there-rich with intrigue, intelligence, and endless plotting, the film is as clever as it is gorgeous to look at. An appropriate sign-off from one of the best.
