I doubt anyone could have guessed how well Othello would fit into a modern high school setting-without dumbing down any of the intrigue or complexity of the play. It allows for rich performances from the leads, as Odin is led to believe his girlfriend has been unfaithful by a jealous friend. It ends, unsurprisingly, in tragedy-though the film itself is a triumph of substance over style.
