In the Nicholas Sparks novel upon which the book is based, Allie has a much less prominent role. The relationship between her and Noah became to focal point of the movie after the director spotted the chemistry between her and Gosling. MacAdams also prepared extensively for the role, spending several weeks in Charleston and taking etiquette lessons to better understand the role of the upper middle-class Allison.
