Stephen King has a habit of writing novels which are packed full of in-jokes and references that tie almost all of his books together into one, cohesive universe. It seems right, then, that this adaptation of his short story should have a nod to his other works in it-if you take a good look at the painting Thomas Jane is working on near the start of the film, it’s clear that it’s a portrait of Roland Deschain, protagonist of King’s The Dark Tower trilogy.
