2. Fat City
Yeah, so, boxing movies have kind of been done to death since as long as anyone can remember. But that’s not to say that this fascinating character study doesn’t hold a lot of water- a fantastic performance by an up-and-coming Jeff Bridges throws the movie into high gear, while Stacy Keach does well as a stoic professional past his prime. It might sound like it’s been done to death, but here it’s surprisingly fresh, with no punches pulled (excuse the pun) and a beautiful, engrossing relationship evolving between Bridges and Keach as the movie goes on.
