7. Alfonso Cuaron
The Mexican film maker has had one of the most diverse careers on this list. His breakout hit Y Tu Mamá También, is a Spanish road trip movie about two hormone filled teenage boy’s traveling with a seductive older woman, not exactly the stuff that box office dreams are made of. The film, despite this was a surprise hit: which led to Cuaron being approached to direct, of all things, the third Harry Potter film. Too many fans Cuaron’s take on the Boy who Lived franchise is the defining Potter film. The trademark darker tone that would be present in the rest of the films was born there. Recently Cuaron spent five years making the space saga Gravity. With big name stars in George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, and unbelievable visual effects, Gravity was a monster hit, making millions, topping many end of year lists, and bagging Cuaron his first Academy Award for Best Director.
