10. Without A Clue
This spoof from 1988 stars Michael Caine and Ben Kingless as Holmes and Watson. The twist in the tale is that Watson is in fact the legendary crime stopper and the chronicler of his own exploits. When public demand forces him to unveil the real Sherlock Holmes, Watson hires an actor to play the part (Michael Caine). Tired of his creation, and mirroring Conan Doyle, Watson tries to kill Holmes off only to bring him back by popular demand. Without a clue shows that, not only is Sherlock a fascinating character, the real life events of his death and resurrection, and Doyle’s annoyance at both are fair game for a cinematic audience.
