10 Super-Sleuthing Sherlock Holmes Film and TV Stories
6. House M.D
Another loose adaptation of Holmes but his fingerprints are all over House M.D. This time instead of a cute mouse, Hugh Laurie stars as House the gruff, irritable and sarcastic medical genius; this is what would happen if Sherlock turned his talents to the medical profession. The similarities don’t stop there as House’s best friend Wilson is clearly the Watson of the piece. I mean c’mon, House even lives at 221B Baker Street. Not only that, this version who is the great diagnostician even has a drug problem. The popularity of House is well documented and Hugh Laurie’s take on the character has clearly informed, not only every other anti-hero on TV but also, with his preference to puzzles of silly thing like emotions, can be seen as a precursor to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock.
