10 Super-Sleuthing Sherlock Holmes Film and TV Stories
7. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Granada)
Probably the most faithful adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Homes stories; The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes ran for 41 episodes in the mid-eighties. Starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock (a role that typecast him for the rest of his career) and David Burke as Watson (who was replaced after the first year by Edward Hardwike), the show delved deeply into the source material, rather than just paying it lip service like others on this list. The show came to an end in 1995, after a host of specials, due to the death of Jeremy Brett. Stories such as the popular “A Scandal in Bohemia”, which featured Irene Adler (The Woman to Sherlock), The Final Problem (featuring Moriarty and the supposed death of Holmes) were lovingly adapted from their original stories. If you are a Sherlock Holmes purist, this is the show for you.
