8. The Seven Percent Solution

One of the most popular stories not taken from Arthur Conan Doyle, The Seven Percent Solution has stood the test of time to become much loved by fans and critics. Based on Nicholas Meyer’s hit novel, the film follows Watson’s quest to find Holmes psychiatric help. In a playful twist, Holmes believes that an innocent Moriarty (played by none other than Lawrence Olivier) is in fact a criminal mastermind, and it’s in Holmes harassment of Moriarty that convinces Watson that his friend has become delusional. In order to cure his friend’s condition, Watson takes Holmes to see Sigmund Freud who uncovers a dark secret from Holmes past. Starring Nicol Williamson as Holmes, Robert Duvall (I know, right?) as Watson and Alan Arkin as Freud, playful mix of real life characters with Holmes fictional world makes for a weirdly enjoyable ride.
