9. The Basil Rathbone Films

To some, Rathbone is still the quintessential Sherlock Holmes. Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, who play Watson, starred in 14 films between 1939 and 1946. The early films in the series were set in Victorian London, in keeping with the books. After the first two films, 20 Century Fox elected not to make any more and Universal (at the time famous for their monster movies like Frankenstein ad Dracula) bought the rights and a further 12 films were made. After the outbreak of the Second World War, Holmes and Watson were updated to the modern day so they could use their singular talents to investigate the Nazi’s. Yes these films are using beloved literary characters for propaganda but that doesn’t really matter when the films are so fun.
