9. The Double
Richard Ayoade, the director of cult favorite romantic-comedy Submarine, show-cases his considerable talents behind the camera with his sophomore effort The Double. Based on a novella by Russian legend Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Double stars Jesse Eisenberg as a lowly office worker who has his life stolen by a man who looks just like him. The director never planned to make a straight adaptation; so the film is a quaint mix of Kafka-like bad luck, sets that look even more retro-futuristic than Brazil, and a plot that could fry your brain. Another cult classic that Ayoade can add to the list.
