11 Behind the Scenes Secrets of The Hunger Games
8. The Origins of Panem
Susanne Collins, who wrote the trilogy of books upon which the series is based, put much time and effort into coming up with meaningful names for the world she created. The districts are all part of Panem-a name which is derived from the Latin phrase Panem et Circunses, or, translated, Bread and Circuses. It originated in Roman times when the Government used violent entertainment to distract the populace from the disorginasation and poverty around them-much like the world of the Hunger Games.
