What is now considered Woody Allen’s masterpiece was received with a distinct degree of dislike at the time of it’s release, with one critic declaring that “With Annie Hall, Woody Allen has truly underreached himself… his new film is painful in three separate ways: as unfunny comedy, poor moviemaking, and embarrassing self-revelation… It is a film so shapeless, sprawling, repetitious, and aimless as to seem to beg for oblivion. At this, it is successful.” His ne, meta style would lead to him becoming one of the most sought-after filmmaker sin the world, and many consider Annie Hall influential on the verite, semi-autobiographical style of cinema that exists to this day.
