14. Audition

Takashi Miike’s adaptation of the book of the same name has legendary status as being nigh-on unwatchable under most circumstances. Following the tale of an older gentleman looking for a bride to settle down with, the story soon introduces Asama, a beautiful, demure young woman with a mysterious past. The film launches into an ending tirade of violence and degradation so unrelenting that even the most dedicated horror fans find it hard to watch-although great performances by the leads put it far into the “worth seeing…once” territory.
