5. District 9
District 9 falls broadly under the banner of science-fiction, but if we’re honest with ourselves, it’s really a thinky action movie. Once you take the aliens out of the plot (admittedly, they are a big part of the driving force behind it), what you’re left with is a desperate man trying to prove that he’s still human-by blowing lots of stuff up and going on the run. Alright, so I’m not doing it justice here, but my point is that it lands perfectly between awesome action and careful plotting. And the incredible debut performance of Sharlto Copley.
