Alexander Payne has always had the knack for bringing out the ridiculous in the ordinary-and Election is no exception. Matthew Broderick locks horns with Reese Witherspoon as his teacher tries to undermine her efforts to get elected as student body president. It’s a black comedy packed with satire, delving into Broderick’s lonely teacher’s private life for moments of sharp humour and bleak pathos. And everyone knew a Tracy Flick in high school (in mine, that was me).
