6. Brick

Rian Johnson is a director who constantly creates genre-bending, mind-mashing movies- see his latest flick, sci-fi legend Looper, for proof-while maintain a signature directorial style (one so good, in fact, that he directed several episodes of worshiped TV show Breaking Bad during it’s five-year run). Brick was Johnson’s directorial debut, one that gained him instant recognition in the film industry thanks to the neo-noir style and dissonant high school setting. Throw in a couple of performances from a fresh-faced Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who would go on to collaborate with Johnson again in Looper) as the handsome, troubled detective figure and Lukas Haas as adolescent mafia boss The Pin and you’ve got something that seems unforgettable- however, the movie soon became a footnote in careers that went on to do so much more. Still, if you’re looking for the place where it all started, you probably couldn’t find a better movie than this.
