9. Das Boot

While many people find themselves put off by the five-hour running time of the uncut original, Das Boot stands to this day as one of the finest war movies of all time. The German war movie rides rough-shod over everything you thought you knew about the genre, eschewing protracted battle sequences for tense, intelligent character development and a claustrophobic setting. While it’s come under some criticism for it’s representation of German soldiers during the second world war, it’s still a superb tale that follows a journalist as he investigates the life and times of the crew of a U-boat (submarine). Tragic, painful, and at times difficult to watch, there’s not much here that’s ever been done better by other war movies. Seriously: Saving Private Ryan has nothing on this.
