12. Martyrs

It might not be to everyone’s taste, but this superviolent French slasher has some hardcore fans to it’s name. A young woman who was abused as a child teams up with a fellow victim to take revenge on those who tormented them, with pretty shocking results. It’s definitely worth building your way up to this one, as it’s sensationally violent (famously “unrated”) but not without merit- beautifully, sparsley shot, and featuring two strong performances from the female leads, it’s good to see the women as the villain and not the victim for once.

So, there’s our analysis of the scariest horror films. What do you make of the horror industry? Is it all too much for you or do you consider yourself a veteran? Are there any favourites that we’ve left off this list? Please let us know in the comments.
